Getting serious

Article Abstract:

The New Designers exhibition 1992, which is to take place between the 9 and 12 July at the Business Design Centre, London, UK, is to include design work from 51 colleges, compared to 46 in 1991. Other additions include work from European colleges and a manufacturers' preview. The Chartered Society of Designers will be talking to the public at the event, together with offering advise to exhibitors on marketing issues and pricing. The event costs 75,000 pounds sterling to host, of which some 10,000 pounds sterling is offset by space costs funded by the colleges. In 1991, 7,000 people attended the exhibition.

Designing for our Future Selves

Article Abstract:

The 'Designing for our future selves' seminar mounted by the Ergomonics Society and the RCA on May 6 1992 is reviewed. The seminar focused on the design of products for use by the designers when they become 60. Designing for the old fits into three categories of those people with common age-specific disabilities, infirm old people and active old people. There will be 21 million over-65s in the US by 1995 vs the current 13 million who purchase over one-third of all consumer products. The old can be considered one of society's most forward-thinking groups.

5750: licensed for skill?

Article Abstract:

Most design consultancies are taking BS5750 quality management certification seriously, with 97% of the 145 consultancies attending a Design Council seminar stating that it is or will be necessary for their business. Strict business practices, including a mission statement and an audit by an outside assessor, are now being accepted by an industry which has traditionally been based on instinct, and BS5750 is valued for the way it boosts a company's image. The cost and time involved in achieving BS5750 certification are also considered.
