Getting the treatment
Article Abstract:
Design services are being increasingly used by the new NHS Trust hospitals, although cost-effectiveness remains a major issue. Over half of 21 new Trust hospitals surveyed had used design consultants for some printed material and their logo. The trusts can pay for such projects with start-up funding that cannot be spent on patient care. Design demand is expected to increase due to the development of an internal market, with use also due to rise as more Trusts are established. Upgrading of NHS design will also be necessary as the NHS becomes more accountable to the public and patients. Moon, graphic design consultancy, and Chameleon, consultancy, have both worked on design projects with NHS Trust hospitals.

How to be green
Article Abstract:
Designers wishing to create environmentally friendly products should consider key areas such as energy consumption, recycling of materials, maximising product life and manufacturing processes. Enough is now known about the basics of such design to allow designers to contribute significantly in the move towards more environmentally sensitive products. In some cases a long product life may not be advantageous, but generally the useful life of a design should be improved by simplifying repair and maintenance, preventing product failure, designing for replacement parts and giving the product a timeless appeal.

Design: the Environmental Dimension
Article Abstract:
A seminar was held at the Royal Horticultural Society in London, England, on the new EC eco-labelling scheme, which may be introduced by summer 1992. The scheme will require manufacturers to conform to environmental rules to carry the label and only 10-20% of products within an industry category will qualify. The possible disadvantages of the new scheme are that it may penalise small and medium sized companies because larger companies are more likely to qualify with large product ranges and criteria may be specified too late for companies to redesign products.
