Higher ground: an agenda for SND's future
Article Abstract:
The Society of Newspaper Design (SND) has made several achievements in its 14-year history although the newspaper industry itself has suffered a decline in readership. For its 1992 workshop, SND must consider new directions for its future if it is to succeed as an organization. SND can help to promote greater teamwork between different newspaper departments, give recognition to interesting news stories and stimulate wider interest among non-readers. In addition, SND can also foster multiculturalism in the management and staff of newspapers, learn from the small American newspaper, adapt to emerging technologies and restructure itselffor greater effectivity.

Detroit's finest? A voice of dissent
Article Abstract:
The deputy managing editor of The Detroit News, airs his views on the allegedly biased reporting of the striking reporters of The Detroit News and The Detroit Free Press in Design. He argues that Design's story failed to stick to journalistic ethics of judgement and accuracy. The news was made out as a social struggle between the corporation and the workers. He charges that the authors tried to mould public opinion by their skewed story. There were errors of accuracy and editing in the news and Design failed to present the other side of the story.

Yeah, me too
Article Abstract:
The idea for organizing the Society of Newspaper Design (SND) started with a group of journalists participating in an American Press Institute seminar in Reston, VA. Another meeting in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania during the winter of 1979 ended with the formation ofSND. The 1992 workshop of the SND focuses on whether the organization has outlived its function.
