Nickelodeon Animation Studio

Article Abstract:

The design team from AREA made liberal use of bright colors and innovative shapes to transform a former factory into the new animation studio of Nickelodeon. Function and fun were combined to achieve a distinctive look that would appeal to the company's mostly young animators, whose average age is 25. Five ribbonlike soffits of different colors separate the company's five production groups. The playful and inspirational atmosphere further adds to the comfort, energy and sense of belonging among the young employees.

Delicatessen R&B

Article Abstract:

Simplicity is the hallmark of the design of Delicatessen R&B, a 750-sq ft deli in Santa Monica, CA. The former real estate office was leveled and a flat-roofed box built, with the plain facade of white ceramic shifting attention to the interior. The crisp white motif is carried inside, with some accents such as a black grid and squares of primary color overlaid in the mosaic floor. A tier of oval shelves separates ordering customers from diners, while providing additional display space.
