The best student design of the year
Article Abstract:
The 1997 College Newspaper Design Contest attracted 820 entries from various schools. The contest, sponsored by the University of Missouri Student Society of Newspaper design and the Society of Newspaper Design, recognized excellence in the use of white space, color and typography. The panel of judges included staffers of the 'Dallas Morning News,' the 'Chicago Tribune,' and the Jacksonville Journal-Courier.' The work of winners from 'Ball State Daily News,' The Daily Northwestern,' 'The Tiger' and 'Lux.' is profiled.

The best newspapers in the world
Article Abstract:
The Society of Newspaper Design has awarded 16 newspapers from five countries the title of the World's Best-Designed Newspapers at the 18th Best Newspaper Design Competition. Among the winners was The Boston Globe, Germany's Die Woche and Scotland's The Scotsman. Some 10,000 newspapers from 15 countries entered the competition, with the winner of the most awards being The New York Times.

How newspapers changed: the Gold Medal winners at SND
Article Abstract:
The Society of Newspaper Design's 1991 Gold medal Awards went to the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Detroit News, the Art section of the Washington Times and the Globe and Mail's Toronto magazine. In a recessionary year, when revenues and readership are down, the winners of this competition demonstrate that creativity and great design can be aspects of great journalism.
