Tuning in children
Article Abstract:
Architect William McDonough designed a day care center in Frankfurt, Germany which combined environmental considerations with the children's requirements. McDonough designed the center along the belief that children need to have some control over their surroundings. The roof was fitted with shutters which could be opened in certain areas depending on the weather and the activity. The center was also fitted with underground storage tanks for the collection of solar heat. Finally, the building was built with materials which have undergone ecologically-friendly processes.

Natural resources
Article Abstract:
Architect William McDonough believes in the importance of promoting the sustainable use of the world's natural resources. In line with this philosophy, McDonough established the Timber Source, to provide sustainably harvested wood products to architects and designers. McDonough's firm designed a Wal-Mart store following environmental considerations. In addition, McDonough was also responsible for the creation of the Forest Resource Information System (FORIS), a data base of information regarding all tree species.

Energy center
Article Abstract:
The Pacific Gas and Electric Co developed its Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco to showcase the strategy for building energy-efficient structures. Building designers headedc by Kathleen Cruise incorporated lighting technologies aimed at redcuing energy consumption and cuttting on utility costs. This is achieved with the use of multiple lighting venues which demonstrate the key concepts of lighting. The center also features a prototype of an energy-efficient house called Challenge 2000.
