Capillary electrophoresis measurements of electrophoretic mobility for colloidal particles of biological interest
Article Abstract:
The mobility variations between three bacterial strains were examined using capillary electrophoresis (CE) and microelectrophoresis (ME). Additionally, the mobilities of three types of latex microspheres were measured for comparison. Although deviations for ME measurements were found to be higher than those for CE, there was an overall agreement between results obtained using either methods. However, the CE proved to be more sensitive in detecting distributed mobilities than ME. This should make CE more applicable in assessments of variabilities in biophysical processes.

Effect of fluorochromes on bacterial surface properties and interaction with granular media
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the use of certain fluorochromes as bacterial tagging agents in microbial transport research. Fluorochromes were assessed in terms of stained cell stability and the influence of staining on granular media interaction and bacterial surface characteristics. Fluorochrome 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole was found to have no significant effect on surface characteristics and interaction with sand. However, other nucleic acid fluorochromes examined had greatly affected bacterial cells.
