Detection of Mycobacterium ulcerans in environmental samples during outbreak of ulcerative disease
Article Abstract:
Myobacterial culture and PCR amplification studies were conducted on environmental water samples during an outbreak of chronic skin ulcers to determine the environmental influence of Myobacterium ulcerans. PCR detected the environmental bacterium in samples collected from a golf course irrigation system and a swamp near the area where the outbreak occurred. Results provide the first evidence linking the organism to the environment.

Comparison of membrane filters for recovery of legionallae from water samples
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of cellulose nitrate membrane filters for isolating legionallaefrom environmental samples is presented. Twenty-three filters of various materials and pore sizes were examined and applied to three strains of Legionella pneumophilia serogroup 1. A Gelman Supor filter with a 0.2-micrometer-pore-size was recommended for its high level of recovery, fast filtration rate and ease of handling.

Shifts in the membrane fatty acid profile of streptococcus mutans enhance survival in acidic environment
Article Abstract:
Streptococcus mutans, which is an etiologic agent of the disease dental caries resides in the supragingival plaque and is capable of metabolizing many sugars because of which it produces organic acids. The S. mutans utilizes adaptive mechanisms to withstand acidification of its surroundings and studies show that membrane fatty acid redistribution is important for low pH survival.
