Epidemiology, genetics, and ecology of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae
Article Abstract:
The ecology, genetics and epidemiology of the Vibrio cholerae were investigated to develop a model for seasonal outbreaks of cholera and the occurrence of new pathogenic strains. Cholera outbreaks led to high mortality rates and seven pandemics had happened since the first pandemic case in 1817. Their habitats are usually aquatic ecosystems and in mammals, the gastrointestinal tract. Virulence genes were observed in the microorganisms occurring in clusters at the chromosomes. An important factor in the infection process was the rigid pilus colonization factor, TCP.

Genetics of mosquito vector competence
Article Abstract:
Scientists continue to study the genes in mosquitoes that make them susceptible to certain parasites. The Sindbis virus transducing system could be used to genetically engineer mosquitoes that are resistant to parasites. These mosquitoes would be less likely to transmit parasites to humans and other animals.

Molecular genetics of heterokaryon incompatibility in filamentous ascomycetes
Article Abstract:
The nature and function of het genes in filamentous fungi are described. These genes govern the viability of cell fusions between two individuals and may also have other roles in the cell.
