Scanning for trouble
Article Abstract:
The Association for Improvements in Maternity Services (AIMS) has questioned the safety of routine ultrasound scanning in antenatal care. It maintains more testing is necessary. Abnormality detection rates vary between hospitals and false positive scans have led to unnecessary abortions. Women should have access to the facts and make informed choices. The Royal College of Midwives also opposes routine scanning although the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists endorses it.
