Gain-of-function mutation of sapB that affects formation of alkaline phosphatase by Bacillus subtilis in sporulation conditions
Article Abstract:
The sap B locus defined by suppressor mutations that restored formation of sporulation-associated alkaline phosphatase to spoIIA and spoIIG mutants was identified. The two independently derived mutations were sapB2 and sapB10 which were found to be G-A transition producing Ala111 Thr change. This results in a gain-of-function as null mutants which could not be distinguished from sap+ strains. During transcription, sapB is induced toward the late exponential phase and is expressed maximally during the first hour of stationary phase, both under sporulation and non-sporulation conditions.

SpoOA represses transcription of the cry toxin genes in Bacillus thuringiensis
Article Abstract:
Toxicology research indicates that the Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis larvicidal crystals cry4A, cry4B and cry11A toxic genes are transcribed during the transition phase of replication by the ribonuclease polymerase associated with the delta(super)H factor and can be repressed by Spo0A proteins. Cry4A and cry11A gene transcription may help insect larvae invasion after spore-crystal ingestion.

Mutational analysis of the early forespore/mother-cell signalling pathway in Bacillus subtilis
Article Abstract:
Research shows that receptor activity in the sporulation process of yeast Bacillus subtilis involves the production of a residue near the N terminus (D6) of the mother-cell. The major extracellular loop seen between membrane domains IV and V appears to have no involvement in sporulation. Further research is required to establish more details on the mother-cell development pathway during sporulation.
