Globoid cell leukodystrophy in cairn and West Highland white terriers
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze cairn and West Highland white terriers affected with globoid cell leukodystrophy. A screening test was performed to carry out the analysis. It was based on the molecular defect found in the breeds. Biochemical and pathological evaluation were then carried out after euthanasia to determine the accumulation of psychosine in the brain and white matter filled with globoid cells. Results indicated successful transduction of cultured skin fibroblasts from an affected dog and canine bone marrow.

Inherited disorders in sexual development
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to analyze inherited disorders in dogs. Defects were categorized based on the first step at which development varied from normal. These include errors in chromosomal sex, gonadal sex and phenotypic sex. In addition, the occurrence of cryptorchidism as an isolated defect was examined. Known as the most common disorder of sexual development in canines, some forms of cryptorchidism are most likely to be inherited.

X-linked ectodermal dysplasia in the dog
Article Abstract:
Breeding experiments and family studies were undertaken to prove the existence of a recessive type of ectodermal dysplasia linked to the X chromosome of dogs. The disease is similar to the ectodermal dysplasia in the Tabby mouse and the anhidrotic/hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) in humans. These results reveal that the canine ectodermal dysplasia can be used as a model to further understand the genetics of HED.
