In memoriam
Article Abstract:
Professor Johannes F.C. Holtfreter, who developed several ideas and introduced several processes that are still practiced in developmental biology, died on November 13, 1992, at the age of 91. He helped to redirect the fast growing area of experimental embryology in times of accurate and cautions experimentation. His analyses of cell-cell interactions and cellular mobility contributed to the development of knowledge in this field.

Phyllis J. McAlpine, Ph.D., 1941-98: in memoriam
Article Abstract:
Geneticist Phyllis J. McAlpine made significant contributions to genetic research. She mentored many female students in the field, authored over 90 publications on biochemical genetics, gene mapping and nomenclature, and lead independent research programs on genetic variation. McAlpine also developed the contemporary standard nomenclature officially adopted by the field.

Evidence that MIF plays a role in the development of pigmentation patterns in the frog
Article Abstract:
Experimental studies help isolate a monoclonal antibody exhibiting ability to suppress the activity of a ventrally localized melanization-inhibiting factor (MIF). Immunohistochemical studies on Rana pipiens skin using this monoclonal antibody reveals the vitality of MIF in the dorsal-ventral pigment pattern formation, expression and maintenance.
