LIM homeodomain factors Lhx3 and Lhx4 assign subtype identifies for motor neurons
Article Abstract:
The expressions of two related LIM homeodomain (LIM-HD) genes, Lhx3 and Lhx4, were characterized during motor neuron development utilizing CRE-mediated lineage tracing in the mouse. LHx3 and Lhx4 were expressed in all motor neuron types where axons emerged ventrally from the neural tube but not in the motor neurons that extend axons dorsally from the neural tube. It was revealed that the expressed genes functioned independently from the factors that activated motor neuron differentiation to regulate the selection of motor neuron axon exit point from the neural tube.

Coexpressed EphA receptors and ephrin-A ligands mediate opposing actions on growth cone navigation from distinct membrane domains
Article Abstract:
The signaling activities exerted by coexpressed EphA receptors and GPI-linked ephrin-A ligands in spinal motor neuron growth cones are studied. The sub cellular arrangement of Eph-ephrin proteins enables axons to discriminate between cis-versus transconfigurations of ligand/receptor proteins, thereby allowing the utilization of both Ephs and ephrins as functional guidance receptors within the same neuronal growth cone.

Cracking the transcriptional code for cell specification in the neural tube
Article Abstract:
The purpose of this minireview is to discuss the transcription code that governs cell fate specification in the ventral spinal cord. The mechanisms coordinating the sequential events leading from the mitotic progenitor cell to the mature neuron are explored.
