Parsing the heart: genetic modules for organ assembly
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to study the hypothesis that single gene mutations can reveal units of vertebrate organ assembly and to propose a model for approaching organ development based on genetic studies and supported by evolutionary observations. Experiments conducted on fish and mouse heart development result in the observation of a series of mutations with the same phenotype which may suggest that their gene products have the same pathway function. Findings indicate that there are modular elements in the formation of the heart which are amenable to dissection as distinct pathways.

Neuronal death in the hippocampus is promoted by plasmin-catalyzed degradation of laminin
Article Abstract:
Neuronal death in the hippocampus can be due to excess excitatory amino acids. The tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and plasmin (ogen) have been implicate in the death. Extracellular matrix (ECM) protein expression has been investigated to determine which substrates for plasmin may influence neuronal degeneration. Laminin, expressed in the hippocampus, disappears following excitotoxin injection, and the disappearance precedes neuronal death.

Neuronal pathfinding is abnormal in mice lacking the neuronal growth cone protein GAP-43
Article Abstract:
Homologous recombination-induced deficiency of the plasticity protein GAP-43 in mice results in defective neuronal pathfinding in the mice. Death of the mice occurs during the early postnatal period, with the GAP-43-deficient retinal axons remaining immobile in chiasm without moving beyond the midline decision point. GAP-43 deficiency, however, does not affect growth cone development or axonal outgrowth in the mice.
