Relationships of avian cecal lengths to food habits, taxonomic position, and intestinal lengths
Article Abstract:
A new study measures the cecal and intestinal lengths of various species of birds to investigate whether there is any relationship between diet and cecal lengths. The ceca of 154 species of birds representing 21 orders and diverse food habits were measured. It is shown that well-developed ceca occur in the Galliformes, Cuculiformes, Anseriformes, Gruiformes, Caprimulgiformes, Trogoniformes and Strigiformes. It appears that cecal lengths are related to diet, with species whose diets are sugar- and protein-rich having little or no ceca and herbivorous species having well-developed ceca.

Using markers in gene introgression breeding programs
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the application of genetic markers in gene introgression breeding programs. Time and intensity of selection, population size, number and position of selected markers are presented as factors which have an impact on chromosomes even with absent introgressed genes. Results show that using more than three markers is inefficient, distant markers provide better control of the introgressed gene surrounding segment and using the segment as an initial option reduces selection intensity.
