Role of nitric oxide in parasitic infections
Article Abstract:
Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in the immune mechanisms of many animals. Stimulation by cytokines produces NO, which protects the animals against a variety of protozoan and helminth parasite infections. NO inhibits enzymes necessary for energy metabolism and cell growth. NO is also produced by cells other than those involved in immune response, such as hepatocytes and endothelial cells which are significant in the life cycle of many parasites. The overproduction of NO is harmful for the cells and the surrounding tissues, but the problem is limited by feedback effects and NO's short half-life.

Change in food availability during pregnancy: is it related to adult sudden death from cerebro- and cardiovascular disease in offspring?
Article Abstract:
Research on food availability for Swedes in the 19th century shows ready access to food during pregnancy lowers the offspring's risk of dying suddenly from cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease as an adult. People whose mothers were struck by poor harvests had increased risk for dying of these diseases between 40 and 70.

Helminthiasis and culture change among the Cofan of Ecuador
Article Abstract:
Research among the Cofan of Ecuador suggests prevalence and transmission of parasitic diseases depends partly on interacting cultural, biological, and environmental factors. Indigenous population in protected areas had less disease than those in areas with established roads and regular contact with foreigners.
