Rickettsia rickettsii infection of the EA.hy 926 endothelial cell line: morphological response to infection and evidence for oxidative injury
Article Abstract:
Experiments were performed to investigate the applicability of the EA.hy 926 cell line for examining different aspects of Rickettsia rickettsii infection as an alternative to human umbilical vein endothelial cells. A productive infection of R. rickettsii was observed in the cytoplasm of infected cells after the inoculation of EA.hy 926 cell line. Moreover, a light microscopic examination showed a cytopathic effect after the multiplication of R. rickettsii. Changes in the oxidation status of the cell line in both uninfected and infected cells were also observed.

Organization of genes for tetrapyrrole biosynthesis in gram-positive bacteria
Article Abstract:
Clusters of genes encoding enzymes for tetrapyrrole biosynthesis were cloned from Bacillus sphaericus, Bacillus stearothermophilus, Brevibacillus brevis and Paenibacillus macerans. The sequences of all hemX genes and of a 6.3 kbp hem gene cluster from P. macerans were determined. The structure of the hem gene clusters matched with that of other gram-positive bacteria. The Bacillus and Brevibacillus species have a conserved arrangement of the genes hemAXCDBL, needed for biosynthesis of uroporphyrinogen II from glutamyl-tRNA.
