The Y chromosomes of Drosophila lummei and D. novamexicana differ in fertility factors

Article Abstract:

Fertile hybrids can be useful in analyzing sterile hybrids to create new genetic combinations that identify cross-incompatible chromosomes or segments. Crosses from Drosophila lummei, D. virils, D. novamexicana and D. americana to produce the 96.4% male sterility in progeny from D. virlis females and D. novamexicana males. The Y chromosome in this union interacted strongly with the nonspecific X chromosome as well as with several autosomes.

Male infertility and the Y chromosome

Article Abstract:

Research has determined the size of Y chromosome regions associated with male infertility, discovering a specific deletion pattern. Microscopic analysis of deletions on the long arm of the Y chromosome include proximal, middle, and distal nonoverlapping subregions. The proximal and middle regions are 1-3 Mb, while the distal region is about 1.4 Mb.

Desiccation and starvation resistance in Drosophila: patterns of variation at the species, population and intrapopulation levels

Article Abstract:

Results show that climatic conditions and lipid content cause development of starvation resistance in Drosophila and under desiccation conditions the resistant flies show reduced water loss. The study further reveals that Drosophila species exhibit markedly different resistance to desiccation and starvation at all levels of species hierarchy.
