Periventricular heterotopia and the genetics of neuronal migration in the cerebral cortex
Article Abstract:
Genetics has been applied with remarkable success to the investigation of cerebral cortex development and and neuron migration in an effort to find causes for various kinds of epilepsy and cognitive disorders. Study of mouse mutants have given much information. Periventricular heterotopia (PH) is different from other neuron migration disorders. Migration in PH is not misdirected and not interrupted, but a total failure of migration of some neurons takes place. Efforts toward identification of the PH gene led to FLN1, which may act in migrating neurons of the cortex in the same way as the way it works in nonneural migratory cell types.

Chinese geneticists' view of ethical issues in genetic testing and screening: evidence for eugenics in China
Article Abstract:
A national survey of Chinese geneticists provides some indication of attitudes toward eugenics and other ethical issues. In general, Chinese geneticists support goals of improving population quality, along with decreasing the quantity and promoting eugenic principles. Geneticists regard eugenics in the context of strict limits on family size as a way to make sure that as many children as possible are 'normal.'
