BTR-80: Russia's improved wheeled APC

Article Abstract:

The BTR-80 kept the general characteristics and good features of the BTR- 60 to become Russia's improved wheeled armored personnel carrier (APC). Built in 1984 at the Arzamas Machinery Plant in the Nizhni Novgorod region of Russia, the BTR-80 has a simpler drive train than the BTR-60 and BTR-70 due to the replacement of the two gasoline engines by a single turbo- charged V-8 diesel. The BTR-80 is also heavily armed compared with the BTR-60 and BTR-70, thus increasing its chances against helicopters and light armored vehicles.

Up-armed Pandur takes shape

Article Abstract:

Steyr-Daimler-Puch's Pandur wheeled armored vehicle is being adopted by the armed forces of various different countries. The development of the six-wheeled Pandur began in 1979 in response to an Austrian Army requirement for an armored reconnaissance vehicle. Its configuration was based on a family of wheeled armored vehicles which made it adaptable to a wide range of purposes. New 8x8 versions are being developed to meet further demand.

BMP-3: the unconventional Russian IFV

Article Abstract:

The Russian BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) is considered structurally different from other IFVs along with its weaponry. While its configuration differs from most IFVs, it is actually similar to the BMD-1 airborne combat vehicle which was built 20 years ago by a different Soviet design bureau. The two IFVs both have aluminum armor but the BMP-3 is much lighter than the BMD and is able to float without flotation aids making it capable of taking part in amphibious operations.
