Swire struck deals to sell larger stakes of Cathy Pacific and Dragonair to its mainland Chinese partners, CITIC Pacific and China National Aviation Corp (CNAC). Buyers and seller fared well, but CNAC's deal, based on the threat of starting a rival airline, bodes ill for capitalism in Hong Kong.

The declining fortunes of the airline industry has caused many to seek mergers or working agreements with each other. Swissair, KLM Royal Dutch, SAS, and Austrian Airlines may merge into a giant that would immediately become one of the world's strongest carriers.
