China's campaign to contain Taiwan's ambition takes on many forms besides missile threats

Article Abstract:

China's efforts to contain Taiwan have moved beyond military threats into the diplomatic, economic and cultural spheres. In foreign relations, it has been aggressively trying to convince countries which recognize Taiwan to shift to China. Economically, it has been trying to isolate Taiwan from countries which conduct extensive trade with it. Culturally, it has taken credit for some of the achievements of Taiwanese-Chinese in the fields of motion picture and the arts.

China hard-liners spark concerns of Taiwan official

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Frederick Chien has expressed concern over the growing influence of hard-liners in the Chinese government and its implications on Taiwan's relationship with the mainland. Chien believes that these hard-liners have mistaken impressions with regard to Taiwan's growing democracy and US policy towards China. He stressed that a miscalculation on China's part is a very real possibility.

Top Taiwan general sparks talk of military-Taipei rift

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that recent statements attributed to the chief of staff of the Taiwanese military are indicative of a rift between the island's military and civilian authorities. Taiwan has remained defiant in the face of Chinese intimidation but several newspapers had quoted Gen. Lo Pen-li calling on Taiwanese politicians to cease their unrealistic advocacy of independence.
