Union PLC and the five other firms that comprise London, England's discount house financial sector are diversifying their lending interests in the mid-1990s. This is because the Bank of England plans to end its practice of making short-term loans available exclusively to discount houses.

South Korea announced on Nov 21, 1997, that it would ask the International Monetary Fund for $20 billion for a bailout of the country's troubled banking system. The announcement caused the country's currency to plummet and drove the stock market to its lowest level since Jul 1987.
