Selecting Trainee Conference Interpreters: A Preliminary Study
Article Abstract:
The increasing number of international organizations results in a growing need for competent translation and interpretation services. Problems in recruitment and training of such personnel gave rise to the study presented in this paper. Objective criteria for the selection of students to courses in interpreting techniques was (and is) needed. Objective tests to evaluate a student's ability to grasp rapidly and to convey the essential meaning of what is being said was the main purpose of this study. Several tests were developed to test trainees. Good performance on the tests was associated with a good showing on the oral interpreting examinations. The specific aim of the study was to evaluate objective tests which are intended to assess candidates' ability to grasp rapidly and convey the meaning of spoken discourse, with a view to improving the selection procedure for candidate trainee interpreters.

India will soon have a vintage car museum. This will be set up by Pranlal Bhogilal. He owns a large fleet of vintage cars. The Rs100 crore museum will be in Ahmedabad. The museum will display popular models of olden days. It will also have shops selling souvenirs and restaurants. (gs) for development. In Mumbai, the fall in growth will be 10 percent. It has predicted a 15 percent fall both in the central business district of Nariman Point and the secondary districts of Bandra- Kurla and Andheri- Kurla. The fall is due to the shifting from these regions by foreign firms. In Delhi, capital values are predicted to drop by 10 percent and the rentals by about 5 percent.
