On the edge of something big: edge-city economic development in Croydon, south London

Article Abstract:

A study of the borough of Croydon, London, England, can provide valuable information about the socio-economic basis of developments in suburban and edge-city areas led by the service sector. Croydon Borough Council has increasingly focused on presenting the area's economy as an edge city, and has played a role in setting up an eight-member network of European edge cities. Croydon has a strong industrial structure, but this is not sufficient in itself to bring about sustained and balanced economic development. The very rapidity of edge-city development could create barriers to future economic development.

Inner-city commercial strips: evolution, decay-retrofit?

Article Abstract:

Commercial strips, defined as major city streets hosting a range of commercial activities, represent typical landscapes in US cities. However they have become problematic environments as city planning policy focuses on donwtown areas. They often lack connections to their surroundings and have uncoordinated and unsafe development patterns. Three inner city commercial strips in Los Angeles are used as examples of physical retrofit following a survey to measure the levels of dissatisfaction and perceived problems and desired changes.
