Patent wars

Article Abstract:

There is concern about the large number of patents being awarded, especially those relating to the internet, giving rise to fears that it will become dominated by monopolies. A new appeals procedure favored patent-holders from 1980s and new technology areas have come to be covered by patents. Patents offer companies barriers to entry which give them an advantage. They also help in developing corporate capital values. Patent holding previously lost support because it was abused by companies, and this could happen again.
