Barclays weathers the storm: profit drops slightly, but crunch hit is small; dividend is cheered, too

Full-year 2007 net profit for British bank Barclays PLC fell by 3.4% to 4.42 bil pounds sterling, but net write-downs grew only slightly from earlier expectations to reach 1.64 bil pounds sterling. Barclays raised its dividend by 9.7%, from 31 pence to 34 pence.
