Sowing architectural seeds: Bristol Architecture Centre opens this week as Virginia Bottomley consults on the possible future of a national centre
Article Abstract:
The possible advantages of establishing a national architecture centre has been discussed by heritage secretary Virginia Bottomley and representatives of the Architecture Foundation. There are several new regional centres being created, and most are in converted premises. Architecture centres are predominant in Europe and North America and are aimed at involving the public in projects and encouraging in interest in their surroundings. They also aim to provide a base for professional networking. The Architecture Foundation in London was established to make architecture more public, and the RIBA is also active in promoting architecture to a broader audience.

Clarifying some validation issues
Article Abstract:
Several points concerning the role of the Architects Registration Board (ARB) in education have been raised, particularly regarding the validation of higher education courses. The validation panel activities are confidential and there needs to be an atmosphere of trust between those undertaking validation and the schools concerned. The ARB and the RIBA bear the cost of UK validation, which is currently 60,000 pounds sterling per year. Pressures and emerging issues from a wide ranging consultation on validation include those from the quality Assurance Agency and the Stansfield Smith review.

Clare Melhuish reviews...Architectural space and awareness in Iran
Article Abstract:
The Third International Congress of Urbanism and Architecture Students took place last week in Tabriz, Iran. The student designs displayed at the event revealed a still-thriving interest in Post-Modernism and Deconstructivism among Iranian architecture students. Theree seems a certain preoccupation with establishing a "correct formula" for design as opposed to Britain's emphasis on encouraging diverse ways of thinking.
