Specifier's choice: House on Rutland Water
Article Abstract:
Architect Julian Marsh's main aim was to achieve a high quality of workmanship on a conversion project near Rutland Water, England. The project included internal and external work to a post-war bungalow. Marsh chose local firm Norman and Underwood to install copper cladding to a feature wall and to build the roof. Electrical contractors, Brytec, were chosen as their work was of a good standard and their costs were not very expansive. The main contractor on the building was P. Waller. The contracts used on the project were the NBS and the JCT Minor Works contracts.

Specifier's choice: British Embassy, Riga, Latvia
Article Abstract:
Jestico + Whiles won the competition to refurbish a derelict building in Riga, Latvia, for use as the British Embassy. The 19th century classical-style building had been in use as the British Embassy before the Second World War but its condition had seriously deteriorated. Jestico + Whiles invited competitive tendering on all aspects of the refurbishment project. It was able to use local contractors for some services but obtained most products from abroad. It had to consider local conditions including unstable foundations, mosquito plagues and icicle dangers.

Article Abstract:
Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House resembles both a temple and a piece of sculpture set in the wooded landscape. The modular steel and glass house rests on columns which place it about a meter above the flood plain. An offset platform with travertine steps offers access to an open section of the house. This veranda section has an acoustic quality and offers a new perception of the surrounding landscape. The architectural rigour of the modular design is evident inside the Farnsworth House.
