Article Abstract:

The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) and other leftist-aligned parties made significant gains in El Salvador's local and parliamentary elections held Mar 16, 1997. The FMLN appears to have captured 50 out of 262 mayoral posts and improved its presence in the National Assembly.

A small success

Article Abstract:

Ending the civil war in El Salvador was a great victory for the United Nations and the world, but the situation there is still very fragile. More needs to be done to ensure that the peace treaty is complied with and that honest elections are held.
