Discovery at Penn may aid advances in gene therapy
Article Abstract:
University of Pennsylvania Medical Center researchers have discovered how to turn the treatment gene off and on in monkeys and mice. This discovery may help advances in gene therapy. The discovery would be useful in allowing a physician to know when to switch a gene on or off. Doctors can use the technique to get a patient's blood back up if the patient's blood count falls, and then switch the gene off so that the patient does not get hyper-transfused. The discovery was announced by the journal Science. Cambridge, MA-based ARIAD Pharmaceuticals was also involved in the research.

Pa. scientists may be on to antiaging compound
Article Abstract:
The scientists in Plymouth Meeting lab have found that resveratrol, a compound found in red wine and to a lesser extent in peanuts, extends the life span of yeast cells by about 80 percent. It is unknown whether the compound would have the same effect on humans, but the researchers feel that it might offer humans protection against a major disease associated with aging, such as Alzheimer's.
