Hawthorn is opened; 1st of new hotel wave
Article Abstract:
Hawthorn Suites, an Atlanta, GA-based hotel chain, is now open for business at 11th and Vine Streets on Philadelphia, PA, adding 294 rooms to Center City. The site of the new hotel was the former vacant, dirty, 16-story factory building that for a long time dominated the northern approach to Center City and the northwest corner of Chinatown. William Oliver, the general manager, said the hotel received advance bookings for 30,000 "room nights," or the equivalent of booking every room in the hotel for 100 days. The hotel, which employs at least 65 people, is convenient to drivers leaving I-95 and to the Convention Center, a short walk away.

City oks variance, but is it a Mickey Mouse deal?
Article Abstract:
Goldenberg Group has received a zoning variance for its proposed entertainment center and hotel project at Eight and Markets Streets in Philadelphia, PA, but refused to reveal who the tenant is. Robert W. Freedman, vice present and general counsel of local developer, only confirmed that the company is in talks with a popular, national entertainment concern. However, every one else already appeared to be certain that the tenant is Walt Disney Co., a national entertainment firm well-known for practicing second-by-second control over its vast holdings.

City's waterfront complex dream still unfulfilled
Article Abstract:
Simon Property Group's planned $174-million waterfront entertainment complex in Philadelphia, PA, has not yet begun construction. The proposed Riverview Plaza would feature a new 17-screen movie theater complex with a 100-ft-long escalator and stadium-like seating. The 500,000-sq-ft project, which would also showcase themed restaurants and state-of-the-art electronic entertainment, was announced in May 1997 by the developer and Mayor Rendell. Industry experts believe construction will unlikely begin until spring 1999.
