And they're off!
Article Abstract:
Pennsylvania is seeing competition to attract high-speed Internet users being fought over by providers using cable television and telephone lines. Cable television is surpassing telephone firms in the race to bring the new high-technology connections to homes in the western part of the state. However, the lead of cable modems is deemed surmountable and the competition is merely starting. A source added that companies currently need only to educate as many consumers as possible on to the new technologies with the need to vie for market share in six to seven years away.

Bigger & bigger: Bell Atlantic, GTE merger may hit some regulatory hurdles
Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp.'s proposed $52.9-billion merger has been criticized by Mark Cooper, director of research for the Consumer Federation of America. Cooper expressed his displeasure with the proposal saying the deal allows potential rivals to consolidate rather than to compete with one another. The consolidation of the two companies would not lead to any significant cuts in jobs from their combined workforce of 250,000 people, including 21,000 in Pennsylvania. The merger must receive the approval of regulators.
