Judge: One Stewart charge was thin

The U.S. federal judge's decision on 27 February 2004 to throw out the most serious charge of securities fraud against Martha Stewart, who is ready to enter the final stage of her criminal trial with a significant legal and psychological boost. The judge's ruling is a victory for America's most famous businesswoman because it means that Stewart would face substantially less prison time even if she were convicted of any of the four remaining charges against her.

Spitzer alleges fraud in insurance industry

New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer has sued the insurance firm Marsh & McLennan Cos. and arrested two American International Group Inc. executives in a fraud probe for improper trading in the mutual-fund industry. The allegations, which are part of Spitzer's efforts to rid the financial-services companies of corruption, have reduced the share prices of the companies.

N.J. court delays ruling on lawyers' plan to share offices

A proposal by the Philadelphia Bar Association, which would amend rules that require lawyers to have an office in New Jersey if they practice in the state, has been put on hold by the New Jersey Supreme Court. The proposal, which would allow lawyers to share office space, has been referred to the court's Advisory Committee on Professional Ethics.
