Pa. seeks to boost telecom services
Article Abstract:
The state government of Pennsylvania will implement a new telecommunications acquisition strategy to boost telecommunications services in the state. Under the proposed strategy, the state will streamline its current procurement practice to encourage more vendors to participate in its program and incite them to seek out new and innovative solutions. The state hopes that by implementing a new strategy, it would be able to increase its buying power to increase competition and at the same time cut costs and improve services in the state.

Pennsylvania lost $500 million in wages, tax revenues, and retail sales in 1997 due to pirated computer software, according to a study by Microsoft Corp. The state lost 6300 jobs due to piracy, according to the study. The study says 24% of software installed in Pennsylvania in 1997 was pirated. Nationally, 27% of computer software was pirated, and in New Jersey, 20% of software was pirated.
