Profit-driven hospitals knock on region's door
Article Abstract:
Vanguard Health Systems of Nashville, TN, has proposed in a letter of intent to acquire nine hospitals in Philadelphia, PA, from the bankrupt Allegheny Health, Education and Research Foundation. Duke University Center for Health Policy, Law and Management researcher Chris Conover stressed that people are afraid of the effect of profit-oriented hospitals on the practice of medicine. Meanwhile, University of Pennsylvania professor of healthcare systems for Wharton School Mark Pauly noted that profit-oriented and nonprofit hospitals operate in similar ways.

Merck shares fall after critical Vioxx study
Article Abstract:
A study conducted by the Food and Drug Administration indicated that the drug 'Vioxx', manufactured by Merck and Company Incorporation, for curing arthritis, actually harms the person, causing sudden cardiac arrest or heart attacks. Due to this report, Merck suffered a fall in its shares by 2.1 percent.
