Putting the touch on those who enjoy the city's hospitality
Article Abstract:
Philadelphia's planned increase in its hotel occupancy tax from 6% to 7% will not be devastating to business, analysts say. Combined with the 7% sales tax on hotel bills, the increase will bring the total tax paid by Philadelphia hotel guests to 14%. The current 6% hotel occupancy tax is expected to bring in about $17.4 million in revenue in 1998, divided between the Philadelphia Convention and Visitor Bureau and the Convention Center Authority. The increase puts Philadelphia hotel taxes in the same range as those in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.
