Reading firm is riding out slump in steel
Article Abstract:
Reading, PA-based Carpenter Technology Corp. has suffered because of foreign competition and a bust in business in the US, but it will continue to try to keep its specialty alloys line going. The company has decreased production at its steel mills, laid off 150 salaried employees, and postponed capital-expenditure projects indefinitely. Carpenter has also posted flat earnings for the last three quarters, and seen its shares price fall from a high of $58 last April to a low of $24 in February. Robert W. Cardy, president and chief executive of Carpenter, thinks that he can lead the steel firm through the competitive business environment and the new problems facing the industry worldwide.
