Ringside seats
Article Abstract:
The largest video rental chains in the US are upping their marketing efforts as they scramble to boost their respective shares of the video rental market. Observers noted the increasing competition among video rental stores will allow consumers to get better deals. Blockbuster, which operates 6,000 stores around the world, has seen offering low-priced deals on mid-week rentals since fall of 1997 as well as guarantees, such as giving customers who fail to get a copy of a movie on a select list, since February 1997. Hollywood Video, which has been offering guarantees and five-day rentals for years, said it will build larger stores and offer more titles.

Wheelin' and dealin'
Article Abstract:
The US automotive retail market is presently in a state of flux. Ford Retail Network spokesman John Ochs indicated that the pace has surpassed the rate of change of the past 15 years. Ochs also noted that customers expect more from the industry now. Car buyers can only avail of low prices from car dealerships if retailers band together. The large used car retail chain CarMax is acquiring vehicles despite difficulties in selling them to the public. The company is trying to build up an inventory of cars that appeal to residents in the area.
