US Airways cuts 1,100 jobs at city airport; Phila.'s top carrier will reduce its workforce by 17% over the next two weeks as it struggles with a sharp drop in business

By Oct. 12th about 17 percent of Philadelphia-based US Airways employees will be laid off. This includes 150 pilots, 730 flight attendants and about 200 others. The airline also slashed daily flights, closed reservation centers and will curb meal service, among other cost-cutting measures. Overall, the industry will be cutting about 93,000 jobs.
