Evaluating the financial performance of pension funds: an individual investor's perspective

Article Abstract:

Empirical evidence shows that there are systematic, agency-related differences in the design, financing and investment of pension funds. This was gleaned from the results of an analysis of 54 defined benefit and 66 defined contribution plans in Australia during the 1991-1993 period. Specifically, the intermediary spread substantially reduced the periodic net income paid by defined contribution funds, and this spread is affected by asset management parameters. On the other hand, the spread for defined benefit pension funds is affected by liability management factors.

Consistency of UK pension fund investment performance

Article Abstract:

A survey of pension funds in the UK indicates that 60% of pension fund managers regard past performance rankings as fair guides to future performance, 10% refer to them as very good indicators while less than 15% regard rankings as irrelevant. The consistency of performance is evidenced by the fact that pension funds in the top quartiles remain in the same quartiles for the next period. There is also evidence which suggests that some fund managers consistently show good performance.
