FRANCE: SAINSBURY'S GOAL FOR CALAIS OUTLET
Article Abstract:
Sainsbury is hoping that by summer 2000, its 6,000 square foot Bieres Vins & Spiriteux off-licence will account for one tenth of total wine business at the UK-based supermarket chain. The new outlet offers over 470 wines along with several spirits and, like the previous 3,000 square foot store, is being operated in association with Auchan of France. Sainsbury's original store was regarded as less able to compete with Tesco's 17,600 square foot off-licence or the 50-plus Calais-based supermarkets, hypermarkets and cash and carries.
