UK: SUPERMARKETS SHOULD STOCK FEWER ALES-SCB
Article Abstract:
Brands marketing manager at Scottish Courage Brands (SCB), Mark Barton, claims there are around 250 bottled ale brands available through supermarkets but only 15 of them have a market share greater than 1%. He feels therefore that supermarkets should stock fewer brands. Research group AC Nielsen reports that although ale still take around 40% of on-trade beer volumes, its take-home market share is only 21% due to the dominant position of lager. The least well-backed ale brands are still experiencing volume losses but the top five take- home brands namely John Smith's, Stones, Caffrey's, Boddingtons and McEwans's Export have risen 3% since 1997 to reach 37%.
