A paper jam in the money machine
Article Abstract:
Danka Business Systems has issued a profit warning which has led to a drop of 45% in the company's share price. The company's costs have risen due to reorganization and taking on new sales staff for the North American market. Copier distributors have tended not to perform well in the UK but Danka has been successful in the decade to 1996. The company also has a good acquisitions record. Danka's share price may recover if the investment in the US turns out to have been worthwhile.

Raiding the medicine cabinet
Article Abstract:
Pharmacia and Upjohn are to merge, while Rhone-Poulenc Rorer is bidding for Fisons. The pressure to merge comes from the economies of scale needed to carry out research. Healthcare organizations are also reducing the numbers of suppliers as a move to reduce costs, and companies which offer a wide range of products are more likely to be chosen. Companies can also cut costs by merging. Fisons looks a likely candidate for a takeover due to its only being a medium-sized company.
