Safety first

Article Abstract:

The UK Investors Compensation Scheme has been helped by a 17 million pounds sterling lifeboat from the UK Treasury following a threat of frozen payments after a legal case involving Sun Life. Regulators aim to keep the scheme solvent, but the intention of fostering self-regulation is undermined by government action. Investors would benefit from wider coverage by the scheme, and nominee accounts are one candidate for inclusion. Investors can use large institutions such as the major four banks, or keep funds spread among several institutions in order to minimise risk.

The attractions of leg-room

Article Abstract:

The Isle of Man is a tax haven which also aims to maintain a high reputation. Such financial centers need low taxes, sophistication in their communications networks, and access to skilled labor. The Isle of Man has also worked on the issue of balance between innovation and safety. Collaboration with the UK authorities means that collective investment schemes can be bought in the UK, recognised by regulators there. The island is larger than Guernsey and Jersey which means that immigration is less regulated and employmnt costs are lower.

Getting your own back in compensation

Article Abstract:

UK investors are protected by a number of compensation schemes which vary according to the type of product invested in. The Investors Compensation Scheme protects investors dealing with companies that have been authorized in line with the Financial Services Act. There is an upper limit for compensation which applies to each investor and each company that they invest in. Savers should ensure that companies they use are covered by compensation schemes.
