Carroll's Foods is determined to increase its stakes in hog-raising partner, Smithfield Foods Inc. Carroll's interest in Smithfield has grown to 12.79% after buying one million shares on Sep 15, 1992 and 200,000 more shares on Sep 24, 1992. The outlook, however, for the stock is not very optimistic despite the acquisition and the $1.50 gain it has posted for the trading week ended Oct 23, 1992. Smithfield Chmn J.W. Luter III and B.T. Luter possess 23.6% of the stock while institutions own about 30%.

Japan updates infectious disease incidence

In Japan, the rate of common infectious diseases in pigs remains steady from 1999 and 2000. In addition, poultry diseases have declined, with 31,788 bird affected with E coli in 1999 and that number lowered to 15,911 birds in 200.

Bio-Rad BSE test for Japan

In Japan, cattle are being tested post mortem for BSE after the country confirmed its first case of the disease in September, 2001. Bio-Rad is supplying the test kits.
