The institute met the DTI Bill team to discuss industry concerns following useful exchanges with officials and parliamentarians, government subsequently agreed to provide greater clarity on offences clauses in the Bill and revisit clauses relating to auditor liability. The anti-money laundering law was finally changed to give equal treatment to accountancy professionals offering services comparable to professional legal advisers.

December 2006 would witness a change in the leadership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), with the election of a new president, deputy-president and vice-president and the appointment of a new chief executive. The institute provides leadership not just to the profession but also to business and the public at large, and this ability is dependent on partnership with members.
