Article Abstract:
The Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, KY, Philadelphia-PA-based Cigna Corp. and Syracuse University were the recipients of the the 1998 Awards of Excellence for Audiovisual Programs from the National Assn of Colleges and Employers. The awardees were lauded for their unique employment recruitment strategies using television commercials and videos. The Eastern Kentucky University television channel promotes the services of its career center, while the video production from CIGNA augmented its on-campus recruiting strategies. Syracuse also utilized videos to promote their career services.

Many companies find that many of the college graduates they recruit leave the company within a relatively short time. Against this background, it is clear that there is an urgent need to address the management of the transition from college to employment. Employers may wish to consider using departmental rotations, as this ensures that graduates gain experience of a wide range of tasks and are assisted in identifying their strengths and weaknesses. It is also important to give graduates regular feedback and to ensure that graduates feel that they are making steady progress.

It is important to recognize that the transition from college to employment can present many challenges. The first year of employment must be considered separately from the rest of a recent graduate's career development, recognizing that it takes some time to adapt to the demands of professional life. Graduates who wish to make a rapid start to their career should make the effort to learn some basic rules relating to professionalism, including fitting in with the prevailing climate and establishing effective relationships.
