Determining what employers really want: conducting regional stakeholder focus groups
Article Abstract:
A non-random sample of 21 employer representatives were interviewed concerning the skills and qualities they value most in new hires. The employers identified the three major areas of technical skills, communications skills and personality characteristics as the areas which the College of Business must emphasize when preparing students to look for jobs. Most employers see solid technical skills as the most vital criteria in the hiring process. The technical skills considered most important include personal computer skills and business function skills.

Employer expectations of students attending job fairs
Article Abstract:
The results of a survey of employers attending JobFest, a job fair at the University of South Carolina in March 1999, could assist students to prepare themselves for attendance at job fairs. Students should dress ready for interviews, which are sometimes carried out at job fairs. They should take with them documentation such as references and a curriculum vitae. They should indicate a knowledge of companies in which they are interested, and contact companies following the fair.

Step-by-step planning for a successful fair
Article Abstract:
Career placement service personnel consider job fairs and career days as effective strategies in linking students and employers. Job fairs give more emphasis to recruiting than to career information. Career days offer more career information and less emphasis on recruitment. Job fairs and career days are major activities that require time, skill, patience and good organizational skills.
